Our journey to Vashon Island
Known for their generosity, Mustafa and Jamila have always loved cooking for many people. In Idlib, Syria, their family farm drew friends and neighbors to big pots of mahshi or chicken shawarma cooked outside in the summer. For generations, their farms shipped vegetables to Syrian cities and even to Europe. Then came the bombs.
When it was no longer possible to reach urgently needed medical care, Mustafa and Jamila fled with their five children and only what they could carry to the relative safety of Turkey. After three years of living in a tent in a refugee camp, the family was able to come to the U.S., where they were promised better continuing care for a chronically ill child. They settled on Vashon Island, Washington, drawn by the similarity to the close knit community they left in Syria. “When we came, we had nothing, but people helped us. We want to give to people here as we gave to our community in Syria.” says Jamila, “We want to connect with people on Vashon, to make people happy. Inshallah (God willing) we will someday be able to help our family still struggling in Syria.” |
